UNEASY LISTENING MUSIC. -An Important Message from ADULT.
Mindless packs, erroneous folklore, misguided shepherds, aggressive incompetence, and real life horrors blend together into this, our fourth album. Why Bother? Some will read this title, sigh and agree, while others will read the title and react with reactionary resentment and countless reasons why one should bother. A test? Why Bother? Well, if you've got a minute to spare, we'll tell you exactly why you should care. Uneasy listening music for uneasy times. A time to contextualize "folk" for our intent and advocate the importance of being folk. Folklore defines a distinctive culture, the common people, real people. Folk suggests a culture content to operate "outside"; the place where we are most at ease. With that explanation, this must be a folk record, but realistically it would probably be that kind of "folk" that conjures up images of "Deliverance", "Motel Hell's" Farmer Vincent or Leatherface's family life.

Uncomfortable, restless, disturbed, perturbed, awkward and anxious. "Why Bother?" hopes to spread the word of weird... Abnormal motivations, ready and willing. Trying to tilt the balance of over-stimulation. What is the next step if VIDEODROME is not the endgame itself? Cataloging, categorizing, sterilizing, co-opting and over-hype marketing have created a social smothering and mass indolence. If you aren't inclined to vomit, than you will probably feel worse when exposed to our brand of folk.

We lack a casualness. We feel the pack is always coming, coming to misdeed, and this leads to our continual unease. Complacency can win because it allows an option -a way out. As the song "Good Deeds" reads, "Lock all the doors and all the windows/ The pack is a comin’, the pack is coming/ Bringing some smiles and some very good deeds/ It's a smotherin’, smotherin’ me".

There is a joke in the visual art work that when someone asks you how long it took to make a piece, you always answer with "My whole life." While half a joke, it is also very true. Whether it is a single drip on a canvas or a labored full size bronze figure, the idea is that it did take the artist their entire life to come up with that solution at that particular time. "Why Bother?" is definitely our "entire life" piece. While written in 4 months in Detroit in our own Woodhouse Studios and then recorded in late October 2006 at The Key Club Recording Co. in Benton Harbor by Bill Skibbe and Jessica Ruffins (our first album recorded outside of our own Woodhouse Studios), this album, of all our albums, we feel is the most accurate culmination of our disordered hysteria.

The photography for the album is by Nicola Kuperus (of ADULT.) and the visual concept and design was created by both members of ADULT. (Adam Lee Miller and Nicola). And yes, we're married. With the departure of Samuel Consiglio in January 2006, a lot of things became lucid. The return to the duo (a duo for 7 years, a trio for 1, and back) allowed us an invaluable incite into our own psychosis, as well as the experiences gained from the 65 performances for the previous album "Gimmie Trouble". All of these things, plus our "entire lives", created the cultivation needed to harvest "Why Bother?". Will you? Will you... bother?

LP version is limited to 1,000 copies and is pressed on Blood Red vinyl with 2 postcard inserts

"Perhaps the least predictable band in contemporary underground music,..." Adult. couldn't have said it better than this line about the new album from Outburn Magazine.

For example, in 2004 ADULT. unpredictably added a new member to the line up. Samuel Consiglio (of Tamion 12 Inch) was originally only added to play guitar and synthesizer on tour for the coming D.U.M.E. EP. The new trio thought to write a few songs together to play live during the D.U.M.E. tour (for fun), and that quickly grew into the new album, and thus Sam joined the band permanently.

ADULT. have long been DIY and a driving force in the Detroit underground music scene. In 1995 they started their own label, Ersatz Audio. They have organized shows with people as diverse as Carl Craig and the Dirtbombs. Their influence is hard to quantify, as they are some of the "go to" people in town - want to know where to make a poster - call ADULT. - and so on. This stems from their staunch independence and their intent to foster it in others. "Everything about ADULT. is created by us - our songs, our artwork, our label, etc. There is no big corporate machine behind us telling us what to do," says ADULT.'s Adam Lee Miller. Miller and co-founder/wife Nicola Kuperus spent nearly a year building their own studio in Detroit where they would record "Gimmie Trouble", right down to hanging the drywall.

ADULT. conceptualize and create all of their own album art, centering on Nicola Kuperus' photography. Kuperus' work features highly stylized sets and precise lighting, and most pieces share an aesthetic of detached intrigue. "The artwork is one element of a whole, a whole that everyone involved was in accord on," says Kuperus. "Everyone knew what Gimmie Trouble was about, the personal politics of it, so every decision reflected that common goal, artwork included." Gimmie Trouble is the album's title track as well as its mission statement. The band explains, "It's about your natural inclinations and the tendencies of others to resist them. People like to be able to predict your next move and when they can't, they like to think they can learn you something."

The songs on Gimmie Trouble are the work of three months of isolation and toil by the band, but ADULT. was able to record and mix the album in just two weeks between the US and European tours for D.U.M.E. "This time limit worked to our advantage, as we wanted the record to have a very immediate punch and to not sound overly labored", said Miller. "I really wanted to write a Devo Freedom of Choice album insofar as I wanted something that was shorter songs that got to the point and constantly kept the pace moving. Most of the music and vocals on this album are single takes, most made within a few tries. We felt this was important for the sense we wanted this record to convey." Short, sharp and in focus. Fast, cheap and out of control!"

RELEASE DATE: APRIL 12, 2005 (THRILL 156)

ADULT. is Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus. D.U.M.E. was recorded in November 2004 in a studio built by ADULT. in Detroit. This marks their second release recorded entirely to tape. (The first was a split 7" with Detroit's Dirtbombs where they discovered the rich sound produced when working with tape.) Also marking a change from previous releases, many of the songs on D.U.M.E. had been played live thus allowing each to evolve a great deal before they were recorded. Aside from "Don't Talk" all of the songs on this release are new and exclusive to D.U.M.E. "Don't Talk" was previously released in an entirely different form on the Dutch label, Clone Records. "Hold Your Breath" marks a distinctive new music approach for the band with the addition of the guitar and two different choruses. This best exemplifies the direction ADULT. will be taking with their upcoming album.

Adam Lee Miller previously played in the band Le Car. He founded Ersatz Audio in 1995. Nicola Kuperus has run the label with Adam for the past eight years. Well known for her unique styles of photography, Nicola's work is represented by the Bucket Rider Gallery of Chicago. She is also responsible for the ADULT. album artwork. Together they have remixed songs by Bobby Conn, Tuxedomoon, Erase Errata, The Faint and many others.

D.U.M.E. is ADULT.'s Thrill Jockey debut. After distributing Ersatz music for several years, the two have decided it would be a good idea to collaborate and release an album together. This will allow the band to focus purely on their music and touring without the burden of supporting their tour and handling various label responsibilities. This is by no means the end of Ersatz Audio or ADULT. on Ersatz Audio.

Published by Ersatz Publishing, ASCAP.

RELEASE DATE: JUNE 15, 2004 (EZ-033/MAMA-033)
Why is the title of this release the Split/Split/Split 7"? Because not only is it a split between 2 bands, ADULT. and THE DIRTBOMBS, it is also a split between 2 labels, ERSATZ AUDIO and CASS RECORDS, and on top of that, the photograph for the cover is sLOST LOVEplit between 2 artists (the photo of THE DIRTBOMBS was taken by ADULT. member Nicola Kuperus, and the photo of ADULT. was taken by THE DIRTBOMBS member Patrick Pantano).

How did this unlikely single come together? One day ADULT. was reading an interview with CASS RECORDS' president (and THE DIRTBOMBS member) Ben Blackwell in a local Detroit weekly newspaper. When asked what his dream release would be, Mr. Blackwell stated that it would be a split between ADULT. and THE DIRTBOMBS. Shortly there after, ERSATZ AUDIO and CASS RECORDS happen to meet and the interview topic of a split releases was brought up. Both parties were totally into the project, and then Mr. Blackwell came up with the idea that the split should be both bands covering each others music, and the project was born.

ADULT. chose to cover a rare THE DIRTBOMBS song called "Pray for Pills". The original "Pray for Pills" was recorded live-to-acetate by THE DIRTBOMBS for the Australian label CORDUROY RECORDS on Nov. 27, 2002 and released only as a 7" single. THE DIRTBOMBS choose to cover a very early ADULT. song entitled "Lost Love". While the original "Lost Love" can be found on ADULT.'s first CD full length "Resuscitation", it was originally released on the now out-of-print 12" compilation "Oral-Olio" in 1999 on ADULT.'s label ERSATZ AUDIO.

This 45rpm 7" single is strongly limited to 3,000 hand-numbered copies. 1,500 copies will be sold by Ersatz Audio, the other 1,500 will be sold by Cass Records.

ADULT. is Nicola Kuperus & Adam Lee Miller. THE DIRTBOMBS (during this project at least) are Ben Blackwell, Patrick J. Pantano, Jim Diamond and Mick Collins.

RELEASE DATE: APRIL 6, 2004 (ERSATZ AUDIO: EZ-028)
Ersatz Audio is back after a little break and we are hitting it hard this spring, starting with this energetic 7". This 45rpm single is strongly limited to 2,000 hand-numbered copies. The songs by Tamion 12 Inch and ADULT. appear here for the first time.

Tamion 12 Inch is B.Kerry, C.Samuel and K.Michael with special guests R.Leah and D.Kerry on this song. "Paper Airplane (Disaster Relief)" bridges the gap between their first 12" entitled "All Black, Eyes Closed to the Excess of Disaster" on Ersatz Audio and their upcoming album (also on Ersatz Audio) entitled "Let's Suffer". "Paper Airplane (Disaster Relief)" seems as though it was made for a 7". Three minutes of constant intensity designed to leave the listener breathless and coming back for more. Pure oxygen!

Adult. is Nicola Kuperus & Adam Lee Miller. This is the first of a series of 7"s featuring ADULT. with friends. "Feelin' (I've Gotta...)" exemplifies ADULT.'s no compromise stance. Armed with grit and heart, this new song delivers with pushing basslines, psychotic melodies and assured vocals. We've got a feeling that when you listen to their new song... you'll have a feeling.

RELEASE DATE: JUNE 3, 2003 (ERSATZ AUDIO: EZ-027)
This limited edition 7" features 2 new tracks from ADULT. Side A features the hard hitting "Suck the Air". A most fitting song for a 7", complete with low frequency bass guitar, dichotomous lyrics delivered with urgency, cymbal hits and more. ADULT. turn up the heat.

The video still on the 7" jacket is the source material for the audio sample in the song of N. Kuperus running in "High Heels on Tile Floors".

Anxiety Rules! The new album "Anxiety Always" from Detroit's premier paranoids ADULT. is here. Is this their first album, or their second? Well, that depends on if you think that their last long player "Resuscitation" was an album or a collection of singles. Frankly, we can't decide, and we really don't care! What is important is that the new ADULT. album "Anxiety Always" is ready for release. 10 hard-hitting new songs about the times we live in, and how the more things change, the more things stay the same. Songs laced with sardonic humor, about the ironic details of relationships, the apprehension of public life, and songs about nothing - literally - about nothingness!

ADULT. features married-manics Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller. While not working on ADULT., they also run the Ersatz Audio label, that releases most of their music. They have remixed over 23 artists including Tuxedomoon, Bobby Conn and The Faint. Kuperus has also lent her unique vocal styling to bands such as Chicks on Speed, Swayzak and a recent collaboration with Death in Vegas that reached #19 on the British Singles Charts. Miller recently finished up lending his production skills to Magas on his new album "Friends Forever" on Ersatz Audio.

A lot has happened since ADULT.'s last LP "Resuscitation", and this new album proves it. Saturated with assured tension and nonchalant panic, "Anxiety Always" is dance punk music for the mutants.

A new 12" that comes with a concept based on a popular children's game that has many different names depending on your region. "The Telephone Game", " The Telephone Operator", "Chinese Whispers", it doesn't matter what name you had for the game as a kid, the concept is the same. A group of children sit in a circle. A child whispers a sentence to the individual sitting next to them, and this sentence is repeatedly whispered around the circle until the last child hears the sentence. At which time, the last and first children say their sentence out loud, and inevitably, the sentence has changed dramatically from the original.

ADULT. has adapted this idea for this release. A new ADULT. track entitled "Don't You Stop" has been remixed by Solvent (Suction Records). Solvent's remix was then given to Phoenecia (Schematic Record Co.) for them to remix, without letting Phoenecia hear the original ADULT. song. Alder & Elius (Skam) finish off the release with the same rules intact. The end product is a cohesive 12" with what really sounds like 4 unique songs with a common thread. Re: interpreting the Re: mix process. Packaged in hand screened jackets, with either black, grey, blue, red, or green ink.

ADULT. can't be stopped! With 5 12" EPs under their belt, recently finishing up their 15th remix, and playing numerous live shows (from San Francisco to Helsinki and many in between, including the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival), ADULT. has accomplished much in their first 2 years. Now, ADULT. finally release their first full length CD entitled Resuscitation. More than a simple collection from their first 2 years, this full length album spans 7 releases, with 9 of the 14 songs being exclusive mixes, versions, or recordings. The other 5 previously vinyl-only released tracks have been digitally remastered (as have all the songs) with an enhanced sonic presence that brings new life to these tracks. Featuring the now well known photo stlyle of ADULT. member Nicola Kuperus.

Resuscitation's music defies easy genre categorizing by manipulating the essence of late 70's punk, the sound palette of 80's electronic-pop and the dance intensity of 90's techno. Combining their knowledge and love for these genres, ADULT. has created their own sound that is both knowledgeable and immediate. Whether you are singing along to the infectious "Contagious" or moving your body to their best known "Hand To Phone", one will agree that the songs of ADULT. are impossible to ignore. Non-stop sales and continued repressings of their first 5 EPs prove that ADULT. is just beginning to stake their claim in today's global music community. If ADULT. 's first 2 years are any indication to what their future might hold, be prepared for a lot more ADULT. as they continue to efficiently operate and mature.

After much success with their previous release "New-Phonies" on the Dutch label CLONE Records, ADULT. returns home to their Detroit imprint ERSATZ AUDIO with a brand new 5 song mini LP entitled "Nausea". More than a simple dance 12", "NAUSEA" comes as a complete concept package, thus meriting mini LP status. This release contains 5 upbeat adrenaline-filled songs fusing a numbing combination and knowledge of the vocabulary used in electronic dance music.

Sing along to addictive melodies with songs about Haptephobia, Philophobia and Tapinophobia. Extended metaphors about Misophobia become all to familiar comparisons to failed relationships and missed opportunities. But fear not, ADULT. has not developed a compulsion for Melophobia or Chorophobia. These 5 tracks open up from full melodic explosions to near noise classification and renewed 4/4 rhythms . Unique uses of live bass guitar in 3 of the 5 tracks enforce that ADULT. does not fear everything. So clean your turntable and needle, and prepare to feel the power of "NAUSEA".

ADULT. deliver their third EP here on the Dutch label Clone Records (Rotterdam). Fitting as Nicola Kuperusis one half Dutch. First released as a limited edtion picture disc (featuring the photography of Nicola Kuperus), it immediately sold out, causing quite a commotion! It was then quickly repressed on black vinyl, which seemed to go out of stock each time it was repressed. It has since been remastered in Nov. of 2003. "New-Phonies" features 4 dark, uptempo tracks about the telephone as a metaphor for people's secret obsessions. Themes of privacy, communications and voyeurism lace the lyrics on this release. "New-Phonies" was followed up with 2 remix 12"s on Clone Records, featuring remixes by Carl Craig, The Parallax Corporation, MAT-101, PSS 2099 and Jack Vulpine.
